Your heart isn’t the only thing that can benefit from a dose of fatty fish –– your immune system can too. Packed with omega-3s fatty acids, salmon, as an immune-boosting food offers numerous health benefits beyond cardiovascular health.

“Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, which is important as so many parts of our modern life promote inflammation,” says Miami-based nutrition expert Michele Alonso of Essence Nutrition. “Salmon is a fantastic source of these anti-inflammatory essential fatty acids. For example, a three-ounce serving provides roughly ~1500mg.”

Though salmon’s anti-inflammatory properties are beneficial year-round, they’re especially important when feeling sick. Why? Simple: Chronic inflammation can suppress your immune system, according to wellness website, Healthline.

In other words, “healthy fats, like those found in salmon, may boost your body’s immune response to pathogens by decreasing inflammation,”

Before you rush to your local supplement store, consider a trip to the supermarket instead. “The bioavailability of omega-3 fatty acids is highest in food form (such as salmon) rather than supplement form. Two to three servings of salmon per week is suggested.”
