How To Cook Salmon On A Himalayan Salt Block

A new trendy way to cook salmon is cooking the salmon on a pink block of Himalayan salt. This interesting way of cooking the fish gives your meal a unique flavor and texture, but even better, it actually increases the nutrient value of the salmon and protects against foodborne illnesses too!

For those who are not familiar with what a Himalayan salt block is, it is actually a pinkish slab of Himalayan salt. It is similar to the regular table salt we use in our kitchen, but what makes Himalayan salt a bit more unique is it contains a higher amount of minerals. This is where its pink color and distinct flavor come from. If you’re not sure where to start when buying a Himalayan salt block, this article has tons of great info.

Fun Fact: A Himalayan salt block isn’t just for cooking and adding delicious flavor to your meals, it can also be used as a serving platter as well. You can chill the salt block to serve cold dishes.

How To Cook Salmon On A Himalayan Salt Block

There are a few ways to cook salmon on a Himalayan salt block, we are going to cover them both below!

Grilling

First, place the dry Himalayan salt block on an outdoor grill or on a stovetop. Raise the temperature slowly until the temperature of the surface reaches about 260℃ or 500℉. Use a contactless infrared thermometer to check the temperature.

Alternatively, you can sprinkle water drops atop the surface. If drops sizzle or evaporate quickly, your block is ready for you to start grilling that salmon!

Next, you want to make sure you have a pair of silicone tongs to turn or flip your fish. Also, slice your salmon to the size you desire as cutting the salmon into pieces will help cook the food quickly and thoroughly.

Note: If you are using a charcoal grill, you have to prevent the block from heating too quickly. To avoid this, stack the coals to one side of your grill.

Baking

If you want to use your Himalayan salt block to bake your salmon, be careful! Your Himalayan salt block can break in the oven. In order to avoid this from happening, slowly preheat the block on a grill or stovetop. Place your salmon on the salt block and then very cautiously place the salt block on top of a baking sheet directly in the middle of the oven. Now, cook your salmon as usual. The nicely heated salt block will add nice saltiness to your salmon.

Don’t overcook your salmon.

Be sure to place close attention to your cooking times and heat temperatures because you can overcook your salmon and the salmon could lose its moisture and become dry. Just in case you accidentally overcook the fish, drizzle a small amount of extra virgin olive oil on to it. Then, squeeze some lemon on the top of the salmon to lend it some moisture. You can also try herb aioli.

Final Salt Block Cooking Tips

Make sure you handle the hot salt block carefully. The block can reach a very high temperature and remains hot for many hours. Consider using a carrying rack or high heat-resistant gloves.

Do not use cooking oils or butter as fats can diminish the lifespan of the Himalayan salt block.

More importantly, do not submerge the block in water because water dissolves salt. The best option is to clean the block using a damp sponge. You can scrub stubborn areas with a soft brush or a scouring pad.
